Student Health Services

Waitakere College Healthcare Services
Our school has a full time Registered Nurse on staff. The nurse oversees the general health and wellbeing of the students by providing basic first aid on site and liaising with external healthcare services and parents/caregivers as required.
Our registered nurse is part of the Student Support Services with the Youth Workers, guidance counsellors and careers advisers. The nurse is employed by the school but is partially funded by the Ministry of Health. This ensures a close working relationship between education and health.
Our Registered Nurse is Michelle Chrustowski.
Our Philosophy on Healthcare
Halfdan Mahler, Director General (1973-1983) of the World Health Organisation (WHO), defined "Health For All" in 1981 as follows-
"Health For All" means that health is to be brought within reach of everyone in a given country. And by "health" is meant a personal state of wellbeing, not just the availability of health services - a state of health that enables a person to lead a socially and economically productive life.
Confidentiality
The nurse works in accordance with the New Zealand Nursing Council code of conduct, to offer a youth friendly confidential service. Students using the health services are assured of confidentiality. They are, however made aware of the “the three harms” that may result in our having to engage outside agencies and/or their family and caregivers to ensure their safety. These “harms” are as follows:
•Harm to self
•The student is harming others
•Someone is harming the student
Student Access
The student health centre is open Monday to Friday from 0830 to 1530 during term time. The Nurses office is situated in the Student Centre.
Students are welcome to see the School Nurse before school and after school and during break times. If they need to see the Nurse during school lessons they will need a release slip from their teacher.

Medication
As the Nurse can be working with students offsite or attending meetings medications cannot always be accessed. It is therefore preferred that students self-medicate rather than relying on the Nurse to administer. To assist with the administration of medication in school we require parents’/ carers’ written permission, any relevant doctor’s letters and the correctly labelled and prescribed medication. This will be kept in a locked cupboard.
